The European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction which forms the regional platform structure of Europe was held 24th – 26th November 2021. Prof. Dilanthi Amaratunga co-chaired the side event on ‘Scaling up disaster risk reduction in civil protection and healthcare’ on 25th November 2021 with the focus of strengthen the EU’s resilience and contribute to smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Prof. Richard Haigh delivered a keynote on ‘Challenges and opportunities in an emerging and changing disaster risk landscape’ at the side event. The keynote covered the challenges of systemic risk and used the Ciliwung River and Jakarta, and Bandung as an urban agglomeration, Padang as a tsunami prone area, as examples of the complex interdependencies that are non-linear. The event has become a dissemination platform for the initial findings of the study to a wider international audience.
